The Keweenaw National Park Visitor Center is a great place to start learning more about the history of the area. The Visitors Center serves as a museum and is home to the Isle Royale and Keweenaw Parks Association Bookstore, and Park Rangers happy to provide insight and information to guide your explorations.
Calumet is historically significant due to the copper mining industry that was based in the region from 1840-1968. While the industry has left, artifacts remain in the form of people, buildings, culture and indelible marks on the landscape.  The Keweenaw National Historical Park (KNHP) was formed in 1992  to remind the public of the significant role the Keweenaw region played in the industrial heritage of the United States and of the unique geological formations  that are found here.

The Park encompasses almost two thousand acres in four counties but you will not find a fenced area marked "park" or an entrance gate stating that you have arrived inside the Park. The Park represents an area delineated on maps but only a tiny portion of that area is owned by the Federal Government. Most of KNHP is actually owned privately with the National Park helping to support twenty-one designated Heritage Sites located throughout the region and the KNHP Visitors Center in Calumet.
