Calumet Township Recreation Park

What is the Calumet Township Recreation Park?

​Calumet Township is working to develop a  four-season outdoor recreation area across from the Mine Street Station Shopping Center. The area will be for people of all ages, physical abilities and skill levels, while providing accessible recreational opportunities to provide users an area to exercise, play and socially interact.

  • Outdoor hockey and skating rink
  • Warming and concession hut
  • Pavilion and picnic area
  • Tennis courts

  • Sand volleyball courts

Where is it?

Located at the corner of Mine Street and 6th Street Extension in Calumet. The site is composed of approximately 4 acres and is bordered by private property. Additional acreage may be added to the site through partnership agreements. 

Purpose

  • To increase recreational opportunities for residents and visitors to our community.
  • To help create that place where people want to live, work, play, and visit.
  • To increase community pride. 
  • To improve the tax base and attract private and commercial investment.

Goals

Short-term
Design and install a parking lot and playground equipment. This equipment was received late in the fall of 2020 and will be installed in spring 2021.
The fitness and playground  equipment shown has already been purchased. This equipment will be installed in the area indicated on concept map above.

Long-term
Develop this township owned property into a multi-use recreation area that also serves to connect community assets including trails, our commercial district, our downtown(s), and National Historical Park resources.
​Specifically, development of the recreation area will also include;
  • Improvements and access to the Fireman's Memorial, 
  • Improved access to historical sites within the adjacent industrial core
  • Wayfinding to welcome visitors to the community and better connect visitors and residents to area trails and points of interest within our community.
  • Beautification with addition of tree and shrub plantings.

Cost/Funding

Phase 1 :  $60,000
Purchase and installation of playground equipment and parking lot off Mine Street. 
Thank you Portage Health Foundation for awarding Calumet Township with a grant for $20,000 to assist with the first phase of construction of this project!

Our Park Committee was appointed by the Calumet Township Board of Trustees and is tasked with overseeing the development of the Calumet Township Recreation Park. Technical Assistance is provided by Keweenaw National Historical Park
