The Solar Saturdays Proposal!
Main Street Calumet invites you to participate in Solar Saturdays: Art Walk and Seasonal Celebrations! Starting in June of 2023, we’d like to encourage people to travel to Calumet to engage in the arts and participate in community, and to promote Calumet as a destination for artists, and art lovers alike.
The UP is also one of the most beautiful places to bear witness to all of the seasons, so let’s celebrate! Solar Saturdays will be held on the nearest Saturday to the spring equinox, summer solstice, autumn equinox, and winter solstice. (If there is a conflicting event in future years, the committee may reschedule). Solar Saturdays will be reminiscent of Calumet’s First Fridays, but we hope that quarterly events vs. monthly events will be easier for businesses to manage. Main Street Calumet will serve as fiduciary and host the Solar Saturdays Committee. |

How to Get Involved
There are two ways to participate in Solar Saturdays: Be a Participant or a Sponsor.
- Participants pay a set fee of $60/event or $200/year and hold an art-related event at their business on Solar Saturday.
- Sponsors can support Solar Saturdays by donating any amount they wish, with a minimum of $25/event. No other work is required, and your logo will be featured as a sponsor on our flyers.
How Will Funds be Spent?
Businesses are essentially paying for an advertising and planning package. The Solar Saturdays Committee will organize and facilitate all advertising activities. Dedicated social media pages will be developed for the event to host unique and shared participant content. In order to achieve viability and effective advertising, our target is to have at least eight businesses participate in each event and raise $2050/year. We’re excited to see this event grow with each season!
Promotional material design and social media management: $600
Flyers: $250 (120 posters x 4 events)
Digital ads: $200
Newspaper ads: $1000
Radio ads: covered by Main Street Calumet
Total Budget: $2050
If we do not reach our required minimum interest and participation, we will table this and try again with a different approach later. If we have more than enough interest and funds, any extra funds will go towards additional advertising or added attractions like a food truck, kids games, or other events.

Participant GuidelinesParticipating businesses will host an art-centric event each Solar Saturday. This could include featuring a local artist’s work in your shop, hosting live music, hosting a crafting class, etc. Fees will be used to promote the event. A description of each business’ event is required for the Committee’s use in order to promote the event in print and digital media. The deadlines for sign ups, payment, and logo submission are 2 months prior to each event. Late submissions will be considered on a case by case basis.
A brief description of each event you will host is required with sign-up, event details must be communicated to Solar Saturday's Committee Chair, Kayla Jaynes (via email kayla@galleryon5th.com) at least 5 weeks prior to each Solar Saturday so we can properly advertise! |
Sponsorship GuidelinesNon-participants can still choose to support the artistic community of Calumet by sponsoring the event! Your company logo will be featured at the bottom of each flyer and will have shoutouts on social media as a sponsor. Sponsor any amount you like with the minimum for each event being $25. If your business will be doing something special that day (discounts, themed drinks or food, etc.) please let us know so we can share that with our audience! Sponsors are required to submit their business logo to venablelily@gmail.com two months before the first event sponsored in order to receive logo recognition on printed or digital content. |
Sign-Up & Payments
Printed documents will be hand distributed throughout the business district but sometimes on-line is just easier! You can sign-up via paper form or by completing the simple Google Form linked below.
Payments can be mailed or brought to the Gallery on 5th (109 5th St. Calumet, MI 49913) via cash or check only. Please make checks payable to Main Street Calumet and include "Solar Saturdays" in the memo. Sorry but on-line payments are not available for this event!
