Village of Calumet
Downtown Development Authority (DDA)
Small Grants, Stabilization Efforts, & Business Development
This group receives Incremental Tax Funding from our taxes, that they turn into roofs, facades, etc. They provide small grants for needs based projects, ie. facade renderings (professional drawings that are necessary for application for a facade grant with MEDC or KNHP) and sometimes purchase buildings in order to stabilize them and then re-sell them. This group also meets monthly at the Village of Calumet Hall, 1st Tuesday at 8am. Their goal is to support development and preservation in Calumet. You can see our calendar for the date of the next meeting. As of spring 2017 the DDA owns; Agnitz Block (formerly Skufka's Restaurant)411 5th St, and Curto's Tasting Room at 512 Portland Street.
HISTORIC DISTRICt COMMISSION
Exterior Building Improvements, Signage, & Development
John Arnold - Coordinator
Almost all rules in Calumet (other than Federal, State, and County rules) are created by the Village of Calumet Board but there are some extra rules regarding changes to the exterior of buildings inside the official boundaries of the Civic and Commercial District (see map). The HDC governs that domain. The guideline they use can be found HERE. Everyone thinks it's the Keweenaw National Historical Park that administers these rules but it's actually the HDC Commission, made up of your peers. Before you plan changes to your building get in touch with any of the folks on the commission so they can help you navigate the rules and plan a great project. Members of the board typically have experience either on the design end or on the ownership end so understand concerns about making things pretty while keeping budgets under control. The board meets monthly to review and approve plans but don't wait for that next meeting, get started today! Meetings are typically held the 3rd Wednesday of the month, 6:30pm, at the Village of Calumet Hall. For exact dates you can check our calendar or call the Village at (906) 337-1713.
