Rules, Snow Removal & Garbage Pick-Up
340 6th Street, Calumet, MI 49913
You may recognize this building as the Calumet Theatre but if you look at the left side of the building, notice the doorway this is the entrance to the Calumet Village Hall. Inside you'll find Joe Snow, Village Administrator and Coreen Balbough, Administrative Assistant. If you want to sign up for garage services (in the village), pay taxes, complain about your neighbor or find out the rules regarding; fires, street lights, parking, tearing up side walks to access utilities, snow removal, and many more things this is where you need to go. They don't have a website at the moment but our council is working on it (and 10,000 other things). The Village of Calumet is governed by the Calumet Village Council that meets the 3rd Tuesday of the month, 7pm at the Village Hall. Check our calendar for the next meeting date. There are a variety of Council Committee Meetings that take place at various times, always posted in advance, on the door of the Village Hall.

This group also meets monthly at the Village of Calumet Hall, 1st Tuesday at 8am. Their goal is to support development and preservation in Calumet. You can see our calendar for the date of the next meeting. As of spring 2017 the DDA owns; Agnitz Block (formerly Skufka's Restaurant)411 5th St, and Curto's Tasting Room at 512 Portland Street.
CALUMET HISTORIC DISTRICT COMMISSION (HDC)
Exterior Building Improvements, Signage, & Development
John Arnold - Coordinator
Almost all rules in Calumet (other than Federal, State, and County rules) are created by the Village of Calumet Board but there are some extra rules regarding changes to the exterior of buildings inside the official boundaries of the Civic and Commercial District (see map). The HDC governs that domain. The guideline they use can be found HERE. Everyone thinks it's the Keweenaw National Historical Park that administers these rules but it's actually the HDC Commission, made up of your peers. Before you plan changes to your building get in touch with any of the folks on the commission so they can help you navigate the rules and plan a great project. Members of the board typically have experience either on the design end or on the ownership end so understand concerns about making things pretty while keeping budgets under control. The board meets monthly to review and approve plans but don't wait for that next meeting, get started today! Meetings are typically held the 3rd Wednesday of the month, 6:30pm, at the Village of Calumet Hall. For exact dates you can check our calendar or call the Village at (906) 337-1713.

FUN FACT: All of Calumet is a part of Calumet Township but some parts of Calumet are not within Calumet VILLAGE. For instance, Calumet High School, Coppertown Museum and Pat's IGA are not within the village limits even though we very much think of these places as "in Calumet". The Calumet Township office holds a great wealth of knowledge and they have a nice website too, that will fill you in on all that they do.
Paul Lehto (a Main Street Calumet Board Member), Township Supervisor, has a long history with Calumet and if you are looking for a history lesson, he can tell you a tale or two. Beth Salmela and Deb Aubin (clerk and treasurer) are super helpful ladies if you need to find something, they will help you out!
If you visit the township website you will see that they also are governed by a board. There is a Calumet Township DDA that is separate from the Village of Calumet DDA and they also have a Planning Commission.
