WELCOME TO MAIN STREET CALUMET

2012-2013 Snowfall through May 24, 2013 - 314"

Twinning Calumet and Camborne, Cornwall

On Saturday, May 25, at 11 a.m., events begin that will celebrate the Twinning of Calumet and Camborne, Cornwall.  First on the agenda is the unveiling of a sign marking the occasion in the Theatre Park on Sixth Street.  Village of Calumet Officers and Keweenaw Kernewek members along with others will participate in the short ceremony.  Keweenaw Kernewek, the Cornish Connection of the Copper Country, donated the sign.

Twinning is similar to Sister City.  Calumet and Camborne have a great deal in common:  they share a history of mining, of economic hardship when mines closed, and of intense pride in their local community.  They also share a favorite food, the pasty.  Cornish folks brought that food with them when they emigrated to work in mines around the world.

The second event involves the pasty.  At noon, the lower level of  the Keweenaw Heritage Center, Fifth and Scott Streets in Calumet, will entice participants with the aroma of pasties.  Simultaneously, in Camborne, a pasty picnic will begin.  But there, it will be 5 p.m. due to the 5 hour time difference.  Keweenaw Kernewek will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of its founding with a birthday cake.

The third event features another linking with Camborne.  At 1 p.m Calumet time and 6 p.m Camborne time, a concert will begin.  Here, Noteworthy Women's Chorus will sing; there, members of Proper Job, a Cornish men's group will offer selections.  Skype will connect the two places, offering the audiencein Calumet the chance to hear the Cornish.  Camborne will be able to hear the Americans.

Tickets for the pasty lunch and the concert are $10.  They may be purchased by calling 337-4645.  Please call by Tuesday, May 21.  No tickets will be available at the door.

Keweenaw Kernewek will donate the proceeds to the Keweenaw Heritage Center and to Pasty Fest.

Main Street Honors Volunteer Of The Year

Laura Smyth

Laura Smyth, who is MSC promotions committee chair, was named MSC Volunteer of the Year Wednesday during a dinner at Carmelita's Restaurant in Calumet.

During his announcement of the award, Tom Tikkanen, MSC executive director, said although Smyth is a transplant to the Calumet area, she became "totally immersed" in the community.

"In the course of the last few years, she has become a community leader," he said.

As promotions committee chair, Tikkanen said Smyth has been able to do much for MSC with relatively little funds. He gave as an example Smyth's efforts in getting donations from community members for the MSC goodie bag at Christmas time when the organization was low on funds.

"That's one example of having next to nothing and getting it done," he said.

Tikkanen said Smyth also developed a promotional T-shirt for MSC with the phrase "Sisu is our natural resource," printed on it, which he didn't at first like, but came to appreciate, as did many community members.*

 CopperDog 150 Musher Documentary

Every musher racing in the CopperDog 150 has a story.  This year, ABC-10’s Keweenaw Bureau Reporter Rick Allen followed the journey of one of those mushers throughout the race.

Jerry Trudell’s “Sharks Came Racing” team is located on the shores of Lake Superior in Calumet.  Ride along Jerry and his team as they train on the snow-covered trails of the Keweenaw to prepare for the 150-mile run.

Of course, the dogs are the real stars.  You will meet Jerry’s lead dogs: McGee & Rhea and hear the heartbreaking story of Tombstone’s final race.

From the historic downtown of Calumet to the hills of Copper Harbor, nearly 30 sled dog teams tackle the 3-stage event—but only one will be named the winner.   How does Jerry’s team fare in such a grueling expedition?
