NORWEGIAN LUTHERAN CHURCH
HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Calumet, Michigan
"Help Stop The Rot"
The First Norwegian Church of Calumet was constructed by the local contracting firm of Bajari-Ulseth in 1898-99 to serve an immigrant population from Norway attracted by work in the area’s copper mines.
The church design shows a strong Norwegian influence and is said to be a replica of a church in Kristiansund, Norway, birthplace of Ed Ulseth.
Since 2000 The Norwegian Lutheran Church Historical Society has been dedicated to maintaining, restoring, and facilitating future use of this very historic building.
Installed in the 1920’s, the current fiber cement roof has weathered many severe winters and urgently needs replacement. The proposed architectural grade composition shingle roof will closely approximate in look and color the original wood shingle roof from 1898. The $35,000 roof replacement price tag is an enormous sum for a small organization such as ours and it is quite plain that help from charitable donors is needed to meet the cost.
