RED JACKET CYCLOTRON FAT BIKE RACE
SATURDAY - MARCH 3, 2012
5th Street, Calumet, Michigan
Races:
Fat Bike Sprints
Four Cross
Miss & Out
Cyclotron Snow Bike Criterium
Atomsmasher MTB Criterium
First race: 11a.m. EST
Calumet's snow-covered and cobbled 5th Street will play host to the Keweenaw's first ever fatbike criterium March 3, 2012. Racers will test their bike handling skills, strength and endurance in a variety of short and fast races, from the all-out two-man sprint and four-cross to a standard criterium (or lap race). All fatbike competitors will have numerous opportunities to toe up on the start line.Organized by Bike the Keweenaw, The Red Jacket Cycling Team and the Copper Dog 150, the event aims to give fatbike racers a unique venue to test and hone their skills. And, with thousands of dogsled fans in the area for the Copper Dog 150, a heavy showing of specators is anticipated in this extremely viewer-friendly form of bicycle racing.
With one half of 5th Street paved with snow for the departure and return of the dogsled teams competing in the Copper Dog 150 dogsled race and the other half a slick mix of snow, ice and cobblestones, racers will need the power of a steamroller and the finesse of a ballet dancer to negotiate the boulevard-style course, which also features skill-taxing U-turns at either end.
The race is targeted primarily at fatbike racers, who will be competing on bicycles specially designed for use on snow and sand. Their wide tires and rims (3.5" and up) and low tire pressure allows them to float over loose and soft terrain. Minimal profile on the tires, however, will make for tactical and difficult turns and sprints.
Skinny-tired mountain bikers will also be given opportunity to compete on the course: a special mountain bike criterium will see the more familiar mountain bikes try their luck. Excitement is guaranteed for racers and spectators alike.
Not sure what a fatbike is? Shops from the area and region will be on hand with the latest in the next big thing in bicycles at the Cyclotron Fatbike Expo. Stop by and see what it's all about even if you're not racing!

It is a great cross country ski event in a land of great amounts of snow. It is the Great Bear Chase.
New for 2012:
- A separate 50 km classic race, awards, and start time.
- A new 14 km race.
- Improved course - no road crossings, no snowmobile trail section!
- Snow bike race on Sunday! Download the separate registration form for the snow bike race or register online (note that this link is different from the ski race registration).
- Registration/bib pick-up Friday and bib pick-up Saturday at Calumet High School.
The 50km freestyle race and separate 26km classic and freestyle categories will return, as usual.
The course uses the varied and gently rolling terrain of the Swedetown ski trails. After the race, stick around for door prizes, raffles and the best free lunch you'll ever eat.
All proceeds from the 2012 Great Bear Chase will go to the Copper Island Cross Country Ski Club groomer fund (to help pay for the new groomer and groomer building).
